Getting Started with Online Learning
Online Education is designed to make your education possible via online and hybrid learning environments. This provides you with a more flexible way to schedule your classes and manage your workload, but it also requires additional self-discipline and organization to stay on top of your work.

The Orientation provides new students with a quick overview of college procedures and course scheduling, academic expectations, financial assistance, registration and assessment processes, and tips for student success.
You are exempt from the New Student Orientation program if you can show evidence of having completed 12 or more college applicable units at another accredited college or university in the United States.
To sign up for the online orientation or to submit documentation to request exemption for the New Student Orientation, contact Jeanne Stalker at 650-306-3334/3452 or [email protected]
The Assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics is also required. To schedule an assessment on campus, call (650) 306-3452. Cañada will also accept assessment test results (COMPASS & Accuplacer) from other California community colleges.
You are exempt from taking the placement tests if you have taken the College Board Advanced Placement Test in English or in math and scored above a 3, have completed the EAP and have tested into transfer-level English and/or math or have completed the prerequisite coursework at an accredited college in the United States.
Counseling services can be provided either through e-counseling or by setting up a half-hour phone appointment with one of our counselors through the Counseling Services office. (E-counseling services are available during the fall and spring semesters.) You are exempt from the Counseling component if you can show evidence of having completed 12 or more college-applicable units at another accredited college.
To make a phone appointment with a counselor or to submit documentation to request exemption for the Counseling component, contact our Welcome Center at 650-306-3452.
Use WebSchedule to find online classes. On the Advanced tab, select Cañada, the term you want to register for, and the type of class you want (online, hybrid, or web-assisted). Then click "Search for all classes."
Register using WebSmart on or after your assigned registration date. New students receive their registration appointment once they have completed the orientation, assessment and counseling session. Continuing students are notified by email of their WebSmart registration date.
Before the semester begins, buy your books online from the Cañada bookstore or elsewhere, so that you're ready to start learning on the first day of classes.
- Keep up with your assignments each week and get to know your classmates through discussion forums, group projects, and other opportunities for interaction.
- Contact your instructor if you are uncertain about any course assignments.
