Grant Funded Programs

Samples

The following is a sampling of the exemplary work supported by grant funding.

California Alliance for the Long-term Strengthening of Transfer Engineering Program (CalSTEP)

The CalSTEP project promotes an understanding of and appreciation for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers through outreach activities for middle school, high school, and community college students. It addresses barriers to the retention and success of STEM students through a combination of intensive preparation for college-level work, multiple entry points and accelerated pathways into STEM education, and other proven academic support strategies. This project is a partnership with San Francisco State University and Los Angeles Pierce College.

Collaborative Research: Impact of Prior Work Experience on Non-traditional Engineering Students

This project aims to create new pathways for non-traditional engineering students by examining the impact of prior work experience and expertise on engineering students' identities and approaches to engineering study. This work collects and analyzes qualitative and quantitative data from traditional and non-traditional engineering undergraduate students at three diverse institutes of higher learning: UC Berkeley (large public university), University of New Haven (small private university), and Cañada College (community college). The study will increase engineering educators' understanding of engineering identities and of students' abilities and thinking processes.

Funding Duration: June 2014 - May 2017

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

The MESA California Community College Program assists community college students in successfully transferring to four-year institutions as math or science majors. MESA  aims to increase student success in STEM subjects by providing tutoring, Academic Excellence workshops, and peer mentoring as well as STEM-related student clubs and professional speaker panels. Students are engaged in leadership development, scientific seminars, and field trips to industry and four-year universities.

A2B (Associate's to Bachelor's Degree)

The A2B Program provides academic support and case management services to students preparing to enroll or already enrolled in University Center bachelor's degree programs offered by partner universities on the Cañada College campus. Cañada students interested in earning a bachelor's degree can also participate in the A2B Scholars Programs, which include major-related workshops, speaker series, research support, faculty mentoring, peer mentoring, and specialized library services.
