Course Descriptions
ESL 400 Composition for Multilingual Students (5 units)
Designed for advanced English language learners. Students plan, organize, compose, and revise expository essays based on the analysis of complex fiction and nonfiction texts from diverse American authors and works of social, historical, and cultural importance. Students synthesize academic sources to support arguments. Students utilize advanced English grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary.
ESL 800 ESL Preparatory Course (5 units)
Beginning-level English-language instruction for speakers of other languages. Developmental practice in all language skills: grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Preparation for ESL Level I courses.
ESL 808 Intensive Grammar Review (3 units)
This course is for students whose native language is other than English. Students review, practice, and synthesize the grammar in reading, writing, listening/speaking skills of standard English in an academic context.
ESL 836 English Pronunciation (2 units)
This is a course for students whose native language is other than English. It is designed to ear train participants to American intonation and pronunciation. There is additional attention to analysis of pronunciation of language related to academic disciplines and vocational areas.
ESL 837 Intermediate Vocabulary Development (2 units)
In this course students learn to use word analysis skills to expand vocabulary, as well as to use strategies for understanding new words from contexts. There is additional attention to analysis of word parts and to expanding vocabulary via domains and concepts related to academic disciplines and vocational areas.
ESL 911 Reading and Listening-Speaking I (5 units)
Introduces students to high-beginning integrated practice in reading, speaking and listening for academic English. Special attention is paid to high beginning vocabulary and comprehension of original authentic readings and lectures.
ESL 912 Reading and Listening-Speaking II (5 units)
Introduces students to intermediate integrated practice in reading, speaking and listening for academic English. Special attention is paid to intermediate vocabulary and comprehension of original authentic readings and lectures.
ESL 913 Reading and Listening - Speaking III (5 units)
Introduces students to high-intermediate integrated practice in reading, speaking and listening for academic English. Special attention is paid to advanced vocabulary and comprehension of original authentic readings and lectures. The course is designed to prepare students for college-level entry courses.
ESL 914 Reading and Listening - Speaking IV (5 units)
Introduces students to advanced integrated practice in reading, speaking and listening for academic English. Special attention is paid to advanced vocabulary and comprehension of original authentic readings and lectures. The course is designed to prepare students for college-level entry courses.
ESL 921 Grammar and Writing I (5 units)
Introduces students to grammar and writing skills at the high-beginning level. Special attention is paid to grammar terminology for the purpose of editing student writing.
ESL 922 Grammar and Writing II (5 units)
Introduces students to grammar and writing skills at the intermediate level. Special attention is paid to grammar terminology for the purpose of editing student writing.
ESL 923 Grammar and Writing III (5 units)
Introduces students to writing skills at the high-intermediate level. Special attention is paid to grammar terminology for the purpose of editing student writing.
ESL 924 Grammar and Writing IV (5 units)
Introduces students to grammar and writing skills at the advanced level. Special attention is paid to grammar terminology for the purpose of editing student writing.
