Classified Senate Sponsored Student Scholarships
The Cañada Classified Senate is proud to offer two student scholarships honoring former classified staff, Pat Hanada and Gail Kamei. Classified staff take part in many activities, drives, drawings, and even voluntary payroll reduction in order to help raise funds for students who study and work on our campus. These scholarships applications become available via the Cañada College Financial Aid office every year at the beginning of the Spring Semester.
Pat Hanada Student Scholarship
Who was Pat Hanada and why is there a scholarship on her honor?
Pat was a duplicating operator here at the Cañada College. She provided Halloween parties in the early 1970's as a way to give back to the College community. By herself, she decorated the Central Duplicating office, prepared the food, and provided games, then invited everyone to enjoy the festivities.
Pat suddenly passed away in 1998. An instructor wanted to honor Pat by continuing the celebration and created the student scholarship in her name. Every year, we continue this celebration and enjoy each other’s company while raising money for the Pat Hanada Student Scholarship that is awarded to a deserving student.
Gail Kamei Student Scholarship
Who was Gail Kamei and why is there a scholarship to honor her?
Gail Kamei came to Cañada College in 1984 working as an assistant in Central Duplicating and decided to leave in 1990 to be a stay at home mom. In 1999, Gail returned to run Cañada’s Central Duplicating Department as the Reprographics Technician where she remained a steadfast, reliable and dedicated member of the College until she was no longer well enough to work due to her battle with breast cancer. Gail passed away on November 29, 2014.
One of Gail’s favorite pastime was photography. Her photographs are truly extraordinary and grace many offices and workspaces across campus. In honor of Gail, Cañada raises money for the Gail Kamei Scholarship by selling calendars which include a couple of Gail’s photographs.
